“안사면 안샀지 촌스런 디자인은 절대 NO”웰빙 넘어선 웰리빙…생활공간을 갤러리처럼
아트야말로 ‘최고의 럭셔리(luxury)’라 했던가. 그러나 이제 아트는 더이상 럭셔리가 아니다. 우리 생활 속에 빠르게 스며들며 친구처럼 가까워지고 있다. 비록 점당 수백, 수천만원씩 하는 미술품은 사지 못하더라도 시계 하나, 컵 하나를 사도 남과 다른 것, 예술적인 것을 원하는 이들이 늘고 있다. 특히 2030세대는 ‘안 사면 안 샀지 촌스러운 디자인은 용서가 안된다’며 아트 수준에 범접하는 아이템으로 눈길을 돌리고 있다. 이제 ‘아트와 라이프스타일의 만남’은 21세기 최고의 메가트렌드로 부상 중이다.
▶예술품과 상품의 딱 중간, 그것에서 시작할래요
=요즘 서울 예술의전당 디자인미술관에서는 명품 브랜드 티파니가 마련한 보석전이 한창이다. 눈이 어지러울 정도로 현란하고 우아한 보석전 바로 옆에서는 ‘당신의 라이프스타일을 디자인하라(Design your lifestyle)’는 콘셉트 아래 또다른 전시가 열리고 있다.
현대카드(대표 정태영)가 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA)의 디자인상품 100여점과 각 국의 아트상품 100여점으로 꾸민 ‘프리비아 애비뉴’전이 그것. 6월 8일까지 무료로 열리는 이 전시는 날로 세련된 안목과 미감을 키워가는 현대인에게 생활 속 아트의 중요성을 인식시키기 위해 마련됐다. 특히 오늘날 ‘집’은 단순히 밥 먹고, 잠 자는 공간만이 아니라 ‘나를 표현해주는 공간’으로 바뀌고 있음을 부각시키고 있다.
삶의 질이 발전함에 따라 현대인은 라이프스타일에 맞춘 디자인 문화에 지대한 관심을 표명하고 있다. 이러한 트렌드에 발맞춰 전시는 Holiday, Living, Library, Dining, Home bar의 5가지 테마별 섹션을 통해 세련되게 변화하는 현대인의 미래 주거환경을 입체적으로 선보이고 있다. 관람객은 전시를 통해 삶을 풍요롭게 만드는 주거요소를 발견하는 재미와 더불어 다양한 아트상품을 통해 디자이너와 아티스트의 세심함과 세련미가 묻어 있는 작품을 일상에 끌어들여 보는 즐거움을 느낄 수 있다.
전시를 기획한 황용택 실장(현대카드 프리비아사업부)은 “특히 젊은 주부와 미혼여성이 예술과 상품의 딱 중간지점에 위치한 다양한 아트상품에 뜨거운 반응을 보이고 있다”며 “조금만 시간과 비용을 투자하면 생활공간을 갤러리나 미술관처럼 꾸밀 수 있다는 점에 크게 매료되고 있다”고 전했다. 이어 “남성도 감각적인 서재용품과 홈바 등에 관심이 많아 이제 생활 속 아트는 메가트렌드임을 절감하곤 한다”고 덧붙였다.
전시에서는 디자이너의 기발한 아이디어가 빛을 발하는 아이템이 인기를 모으고 있다. 하트 모양으로 생긴 사진 클립, 캥거루 모양의 사무용 가죽소품, 액자형 식물파종기 등에는 관람객의 발길이 끊이지 않는다. 지난해 12월 20세기 최고의 디자이너 베르너 팬톤을 조명하는 전시를 후원했던 현대카드는 이번 이벤트에 힘입어 11월에는 뉴욕 현대미술관 주관으로 생활 속 모든 물건을 새롭고 다양한 시각으로 바라보는 특별전시회를 마련할 계획이다.
▶나만의 작품을 만들어보는 것도 한 방법
=이제 공간이 매력을 끌기 위해서는 분명한 스타일을 갖춰야 한다. 남이 한 것을 무조건 따라 해서는 신선감이 없게 마련이다. 전체적으로 통일된 콘셉트를 정한 후 자신만의 센스로 이런저런 아이템을 만들어보는 것도 좋은 방법이다.
이를 위해서는 아트가 접목돼 독특한 아우라를 뿜어내는 첨단공간과 세련된 감각이 번득이는 공간을 많이 섭렵해야 한다. 센스와 안목은 하루 아침에 저절로 생기지 않으니 작가들의 미술전도 자주 찾을 필요가 있다. 요즘 아티스트는 버려진 각종 기물이나 폐자재, 일상용품으로 독특한 오브제를 만드는 이가 많다. 백남준의 경우가 대표적인 예다. 또 기타를 이용해 작품을 만드는 배영환, 첼로에 그림을 그려 오브제 작품을 선보인 김구림 등도 같은 예. 게다가 아트는 요즘 패션과 디자인은 물론 가전제품, 일상용품 등 생활 전 분야로 파고들고 있으니 사방에서 아이디어를 훔칠(?) 곳은 부지기수다.
이렇듯 경제적으로 풍요해진 현대인은 이제 단순한 주거공간이 아니라 예술이 깃든 주거공간을 원한다. 상품도 감성에 호소하는 ‘예술 같은 제품’을 원한다. 라이프스타일 전 영역에서 아트의 물결이 거센 것. 그러니 이제 아트와 생활이 완전 밀월관계에 접어들었음은 그 누구도 부인할 수 없게 됐다.

Rabbit announces an updated version of the Secure Embedded Web Application
Kit. The Rabbit(R) 4000 based-kit combines new security sample programs and
software tools. Customers can use the kit to implement web and data security
easily into their embedded application. The Secure Embedded Web Application Kit
offers a guide for design engineers who are new to the challenges of embedded
security, getting them up-to-speed quickly and developing code for secure web
pages and data exchanges.

The updated version of the Secure Embedded Web Application Kit contains an
RCM4300 RabbitCore(R) with a 512MB miniSD(TM) card, a prototyping board,
accessories, and development tools to get up and running quickly. Along with
our industry-proven Dynamic C(R) integrated development environment --
incorporating an editor, compiler, and in-circuit debugger -- enhanced with
support for FAT file systems, for easy data storage, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
/ Transport Security Layer (TLS), and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)
security. The included security application sample programs facilitate the
implementation of a solid embedded system that uses the latest SSL / TLS secure

Digi Unveils New NS9215 and NS9210 at ESC Silicon Valley 2008, Booth 2018
Digi International (Nasdaq: DGII) today introduced the NS9215 and NS9210,
the industry's first microprocessors to include Flexible Interface Modules
(FIMS) that provide different hardware interfaces based on the needs of the
product or application. FIMs reduce product design complexity and cost by
cutting the number of electronic components in a product.

"The new processor family can be customized for any unique set of I/O,"
said Joel Young, senior vice president of research and development and CTO,
Digi International. "Both processors integrate two independent high-speed
controllers that are programmable as FIMs for a wide range of interfaces.
Different FIMs can be loaded from software when needed to provide specific
interface capabilities."
Based on a powerful ARM926EJ-S core capable of operating at speeds up to
150 MHz, the NS9215 and NS9210 also provide enhanced security through an
on-chip 256-bit AES accelerator. The integrated NIST-certified AES accelerator
provides secure network communication with SSL/TLS and IPsec protocols. The
accelerator encrypts and decrypts data streams up to 10 times faster than a
software-only solution and provides strong data privacy for any customer
information stored or transmitted by the processor.
Additionally, the family features Digi Dynamic Power Control(TM), a
complete set of hardware and software features for product designs that demand
low power consumption and advanced power management. The processors can be
instructed to shut down or use a power saving reduced speed mode while idle or
waiting for input, and restart the processor when needed or to respond to
incoming networking traffic. This makes the processors ideal for mobile,
battery-operated and other power constrained devices.
The NS9215 also features 4 KB of I/D cache, 10/100 Ethernet MAC, four
high-speed UARTs, SPI, I2C, 4 PWMs or 10 timers, 12-bit ADC, a quadrature
decoder, RTC with battery backup, up to 108 GPIOs and access to 2 FIMs. FIM
support is available now for SD/SDIO, CAN bus, 1-Wire and additional UARTs.
FIM support for USB low-speed device, parallel bus, I2S, and Wiegand interfaces
is in development.
The NS9215 is available in a 265-pin (15 x 15 mm) BGA package. The NS9210
is available in a 177-pin (13 x 13 mm) BGA version that offers a smaller
footprint with access to a subset of the NS9215 interfaces. It is also
pin-compatible with Digi's NS7520 ARM7-based NET+ARM microprocessor. Both
products are RoHS compliant and industrial temperature rated.
The new NET+ARM microprocessors are used in Digi's new embedded modules,
including the currently available ConnectCore(TM) 9P 9215. The module provides
access to all the new features of the NS9215 and can accelerate product design
for rapid prototyping and faster time to market. The NS9210 will be designed
into the next generation of the popular Digi Connect ME(R) embedded device
server, providing improved secure networking capabilities and additional
interface flexibility.
The NS9215 is available in sample quantities now and in June 2008 for
US$11.95 in 10,000 quantities. The NS9210 will be available in June 2008 for
US$9.95 in 10,000 quantities. Development kits for the NET+ARM NS9215,
ConnectCore 9P 9215 and NET+OS(R) 7.3 are available now, and kits for the

“디자인 하거나 사임하라(Design or resign)!”
“디자인 하지 않으면 죽는다(Design or die)!”
최근 자주 인용되는 말이다. 앞의 것은 영국 대처 수상이 영국병을 치유하자며 첫 각료회의에서 한 말이고, 뒤는 뉴질랜드의 한 공공디자인 진흥기관 안내책자에 실린 글이다.
최근 정부와 지자체에서 부각되는 화두는 단연 디자인이다.
이명박 대통령은 선거 당시 ‘디자인 인 코리아, 멋진 한국’ 공약을 발표했다. 도시디자인 공공디자인 등 도시경관 업그레이드를 위한 정책들이 관련법 제정과 함께 속도감 있게 진행 중이다.
도시경관 업그레이드 정책과 함께 고려해야 할 것이 ‘장애 유무에 관계없이 편리한 생활환경 구현’을 위한 이른바 ‘유니버설 디자인(Universal Design)’이다.
유니버설 디자인은 별도로 개조하거나 특별히 설계하지 않아도 모든 사람들이 최대한 사용하기 쉽게 만들어진 제품과 환경에 대한 디자인을 의미한다.
청계천 복원과 장애인 시위
그 대상을 모든 사람들(all people) 또는 가능한 많은 사람들(as many people as possible)로 규정했다는 사실에서 무장애 디자인(Barrier-free Design)이나 접근 가능한 디자인(Accessible Design)으로도 해석된다. 장애인 고령자 등 특정 계층만을 향하지 않는다는 것이다.
이 용어는 미국 노스캐롤라이나 주립대학 유니버설디자인센터 설립자인 건축가 로널드 메이스이 사용하기 시작한 것으로 알려져 있다.
1995년 CUD에서 발표한 유니버설 디자인 원칙은 △누구라도 공평하게 이용 △쉽게 필요한 정보 인식 △쉽게 사용법 학습이 가능 △조작 실수가 위험과 연계되지 않음 △무리없는 자세로 힘들이지 않고 편하게 사용 △사용하기 쉬운 장소와 크기 확보 등이다. 유니버설 디자인 정신을 잘 대변하는 원칙이다.
우리나라 도시들도 각종 제도 정비와 다양한 정책을 통해서 디자인 도시로 변화를 꾀하고 있다. 변화의 중심에는 사회구성원 누구도 소외되지 않고 모든 사람들을 대상으로 하는 유니버설디자인이 반드시 접목돼야만 한다.
청계천 복원 사례가 대표적이다. 청계천 복원 후 많은 사람들이 폭발적인 호응을 보였던 것과 달리 장애인들은 시위를 벌였다. 도시경관은 향상됐을지 몰라도 장애인 노약자 임산부 등의 이동권은 간과됐기 때문이다.
보행안전통행로가 확보되지 않고 안전시설이 미비해 장애인들에게는 위험천만한 장소로 인식됐던 것이다.
고령화사회로 유례없이 빠르게 진입하고 있다는 점도 유니버설디자인 개념이 필요한 이유다.
이미 초고령화 사회를 준비하고 있는 일본이 그렇게 했다. 일본은 1973년부터 정부 청사 등에서 휠체어사용자나 시각장애인 등이 이용할 수 있도록 시설을 정비해왔다.
‘장애물 없는 생활환경 인증제’
2005년에는 국토교통성에서 유니버설디자인 개념에 따라 사회자본과 교통시설을 정비한다는 정책을 발표했다. 2010년까지는 창구 업무를 실시하는 모든 공공기관에 ''누구나 편리하게 사용하도록 배려한'' 편의시설을 설치한다.
우리나라도 국토해양부와 보건복지가족부에서 추진하는 ‘장애물 없는 생활환경 인증제도’가 시행 중이다. 그러나 이미 도시 기반시설이 다 갖추어진 상태에서 완전하게 정비한다는 것은 쉽지 않다.
