President-elect Lee Myung-bak suggested on February 12 restoring Korea’s recently burned down top treasure, Sungnyemun, with donations from the Korean people.

Lee attended the presidential transition committee’s meeting held in Samcheongdong and said, “I believe the Korean people were greatly shocked, for Sungnyemun was a symbolic cultural heritage to all Koreans. People’s void in mind must be touched by restoring the gate as soon as possible.”

He continued, “Preliminary estimation for the restoration was around 20 billion won and this could be financed with government’s budget. However, how about the Korean nationals make donations? In fact, overseas Korean expatriates expressed their strong will to actively participate in restoring Sungnyemun.”

The President-elect stated, “I suggest such an idea since it would be more comforting and meaningful for the Korean people to recover the national treasure with people’s own contributions rather than with government budget”
